Warning given on glaucoma

A Reading MP has warned his constituents to be alert for signs of glaucoma, which can cause sight loss.

Martin Salter, MP for Reading West, made the call on World Glaucoma Day, reported the Reading Evening Post.

Stressing that an eye exam can detect the ailment and that sight can be saved if it is found early enough, Mr Salter stated: "Around 800 people in Reading West suffer from glaucoma, but half of them will not even be aware they are at risk of losing their sight."

Optician Online has reported how eye experts marked World Glaucoma Day earlier this month.

Many practitioners handed out literature to give information about the condition and put up posters in their clinics.

Faisal Ahmed, a glaucoma fellow for the Western Eye Hospital, told the website: "The message was that even if you don"t wear glasses you must undergo regular eye examinations."

He explained that sometimes, people buy new frames for their glasses but do not have their eyes checked at the same time.
